Siblings' Lemonade Stand Honors 9/11 Heroes

Sept. 27, 2021 - On the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, two Freiheit Elementary students along with their siblings organized a lemonade stand to honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in 2001. The young entrepreneurs collected $675 in donations which they will hand-deliver to the Comal County Sheriff’s K-9 unit at an upcoming Commissioners Court.

The siblings, Chloe Ohlenbusch, 10, Charlie Ohlenbusch, 6, Remi Ohlenbusch, 5, and Ronan Ohlenbusch, 2, set-up their stand on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the New Braunfels Farmers Market and offered lemonade for donations from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Their work began the night before, however, when they prepared the marketing plan, created posters and gathered all the necessary supplies.

“They were enthusiastic the entire day,” said Shelby Ohlenbusch, the quartet’s mother, who is proud of their willingness to give back to the community. “They are fifth generation New Braunfels residents, and I am happy to see their desire to help others.”

As the anniversary of Sept. 11 approached, the siblings asked their parents questions and talked to them as well as their aunt and uncle about what happened 20 years ago. They decided they wanted to do something to remember the day and helping the Sheriff’s K-9 unit was the perfect choice. One of the K-9 deputies, Jake Smith, is a family friend.

The siblings knew that the K-9 unit recently lost “King,” the father of the unit’s other K-9s, and they wanted to honor him as well as the disaster search dogs who helped in the aftermath of 9/11. Learn more about these heroes at The Legacy of 9/11 Dogs.

Deputy Smith along with a couple of King’s puppies were on hand to support the fund-raising effort which brought awareness to the unit and all the heroes of 9/11.
