The journalism program at Smithson Valley High School consistently wins awards, and this year was no exception with its online newspaper receiving a Bronze Star and its yearbook receiving a Distinguished Merit award. Individual students also earned accolades for their photography and writing skills.

This year, two Comal ISD teams qualified for the national FFA competition, and more than 50 students advanced to the state competition. Career Development Events (CDE) through FFA help prepare students for careers in agriculture and beyond while honing their leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills.

This year, 28 art students received honors for their submissions in the Texas High School Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) with one earning the coveted Gold Seal and eight earning an Exemplary rating.

Three Comal ISD students, all percussionists, received the Outstanding Performer award at this year's UIL Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest. This award represents hours of dedication and recognizes superior musicianship.

Twenty Canyon High School alumni from 1963 celebrated the 60th anniversary of their graduation and remembered what it was like to be among the first students to open the school in 1959 as freshmen.

Comal ISD athletes have been making headlines throughout the school year, and more than 30 were invited to the prestigious Alamo City High School Sports Awards for their achievements. Four were named 'Athlete of the Year' for their individual sport.

Ten years ago, Comal ISD launched a district-wide chess initiative and today, students of all levels from kindergarten through 12th grade compete for trophies and bragging rights at district tournaments. This year's competition was capped off with a final tournament called, "The Endgame."

Prior to graduation, six students received scholarships through Comal ISD's music program because of their dedication, achievements and involvement in activities such as concert, marching and jazz bands.

Local scholarship donors awarded $592,622 to Comal ISD students from across the district this year, a number that surpasses the district's goal and showcases the importance of community support.
